The Things Guests Notice | Lark & Linen

With the holidays right around the corner, I always love the idea of welcoming friends and family into my home. Over the years, my role as a luxury designer has taught me a thing or two about what people actually notice when they’re in a space. And it’s something I like to consider when in the throes of holiday entertaining prep. Ultimately, it’s the little things that really make guests feel special, and thankfully, those can be quite easy to elevate.

Start in the bathroom: a high quality hand soap by the sink, the thickest ply toilet paper you can afford & a luxe (dry!) hand towel are always much appreciated. Since it’s the one space guests spend time in alone, I’ve noticed that the little details – all the things they touch, really – tend to be more noticeable.

For overnight guests, I always like to include beautiful linen sheets and pillow options (one firm and one soft). Plus an extra throw or two so they have options. Ultimately, making them feel taken care of.

Next, creating a cozy, inviting glow is simple with the right ambiance. I’m a bit of a light bulb snob and much prefer warm bulbs. My preference is a soft white, 2700K one (dimmable, always!). Though, in the right setting, a few flickering candles never hurts.

Lastly, don’t forget scent. I love using oil diffusers; they bring a subtle, natural fragrance that gently fills the space without being overpowering. And I love that scent is easy to switch up seasonally, or even throughout the day.

So as you’re preparing your space, don’t stress the big stuff too much. Ultimately, the goal is to enjoy each other’s companies without much fuss. But these easy, thoughtful touches do the heavy lifting in making a home feel festive and inviting, without too much trouble.
